"Heaven Industries"

Circled back on a very old project from college and performed a complete upgrade and redesign. "Heaven Industries" was an interactive multimedia project which allowed the user to create a genetically created baby. This project was completed just before the movie Gattaca came out. The subject dealt with future similar to that of Blade Runner. However, people could no longer procreate and they were prevented from sexual intercourse. "Heaven Industries" manufactured people to help keep the population under control.

The redesign was challenging. It was decided initially to attempt a new direction for the facility. Ideas explored ranged from The Tower Of Babel to something resembling the Finger of God balancing Life on its finger tip. The idea was to show Man acting as God.

The Tower of Babel has its own symbolism of Man trying to reach God by building a tower to reach him. In this case, it is Man trying to BE God by building its own Tower of Babel through genetic engineering. While an interesting design, it felt too fantastical and fantasy oriented.

The Finger of God concept was symbolized through the syringe type tower balancing while simultaneously penetrating the egg which is is so delicately balancing on its finger tip. While an interesting concept, it was becoming too "Metropolis" in feel and was not menacing enough.

The design needed to be more industrial, dingy, and menacing. In a world where infrastructure has failed and deteriorated, corporations would need to occupy existing structures to which some modifications could be made or built with limited resources. Also, a certain level of subliminal "sexual" imagery was needed as it is in the nature of the "elites" to have "rules for thee and not for me" and in this case it was sex & procreation. So to fly in the faces of the citizens, the facility has many phallic components. This is to also to emphasize the return to a dominating patriarchal society.
